'Too Many Poets'

Whiter Shades (Dion Charles)

Key to authors' pseudonyms

I chased the light into the dark
It wasn’t easy for my eyes were closed
I ended up in Chalkwell Park
Listening to the budgies that were there enclosed.

I wondered down onto the shore
The Crowstone shining like a phallic mould
I wondered why the Shades were there no more
Was I in the future or in days of old.

And so I washed the stardust from my feet
Made patterns on the sand that seemed so incomplete
A complicated life I’ve led for sure
Do whiter shades still matter any more.

I walked along the road to Peter Pan
And wondered what it meant the Never Never Land
I seemed to cast the shadow of a man
Pointing to the distance like a giant hand.

I finished up upon the pier
Looking at the timbers that were charred and burnt
My eyes then seemed to open showing fear
Were daybreak’s lessons ever really learnt.

And so I washed the stardust from my feet
Made patterns on the sand that seemed so incomplete
A complicated life I’ve led for sure
Do whiter shades still matter any more.
