'Too Many Poets'

Ballad of the Horrible Old (Betty Joan Crawford)

Key to authors' pseudonyms

Did you hear what happened to Old Black Joe?
He didn't perceive it. He couldn't know
95 years now or so I am told,
No room at the inn for the horribly old.

Did you hear what was done now to dear old Black Joe?
He couldn't feel it now it don't matter so.
But the truth of this fable will stll grasp and hold
The hideous story of the horribly old.

Did you fear what happened to Dear Old Black Joe?
They took all his bright jewels and crippled his soul.
95 now and so bitterly swayed.
I wish that he could have another place stayed.
